Aviation Institute of Maintenance and Centura College were honored with two awards by the Accrediting Commission of Career Schools and Colleges (ACCSC) at their annual Professional Development Conference.
VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (October 8, 2018) – Aviation Institute of Maintenance (AIM) and Centura College are pleased to announce that one of their long-standing leaders, Christine Cordek, has been named the 2018 Outstanding Volunteer of the Year by the Accrediting Commission of Career Schools and Colleges (ACCSC). In addition to the individual award, the school system as a whole has been named the 2018 Excellence in Community Service Award recipient.
Christine Cordek, the Director of Compliance for AIM/Centura, has been with the school system for 29 years and an ACCSC Team Leader since 1999. During her tenure, she has been actively involved in more than 60 on-site evaluations, which shows her profound level of commitment to peer review and a collaborative accreditation process. Her wealth of knowledge and understanding of the Standards of Accreditation make her the perfect recipient of this honor. Vice President of Operations, Joel English, stated, “We are so proud of Ms. Cordek’s being recognized as a warrior for compliance and excellence, not only within our own institution, but in others across the country. She is giving of her time and resources, and is completely committed to leading higher educational institutions in doing the right thing all the time.”
Jan Schoonmaker, Regional Director of Operations, accepted the Excellence in Community Service Award on behalf of AIM/Centura. She described how what started as a system-wide push to enhance the ways that we serve our communities became a way of life for our staff, faculty, and students. In total, 276 community service events were held across 18 campuses in just over a year’s time. Some of the more notable achievements include the Indianapolis campus raising money to provide 40 bicycles to students at nearby McClelland Elementary School, the Norfolk campus developing a program to enhance academic training for the Norfolk Fire-Rescue Academy recruits, free certified drone piloting courses to high school students, and additional fundraising and staffing for other organizations’ events. One such organization is the Safe House Project, which works to build safe houses for survivors of human trafficking.
Aviation Institutes of Maintenance and Centura Colleges are proud and humbled to be identified as standouts among their peers. Says Cordek in her speech, “I come before the highest ranked of the nationally recognized accreditors and its membership to accept this honor. I am truly humbled. Schoonmaker echoes this sentiment in her speech, saying, “It is a true honor. Changing a culture within a company is difficult; but quite frankly, all of our 18 campuses fully embraced our transformation into community-focused career colleges.” Ms. Cordek and the AIM/Centura institutions were honored at ACCSC’s Annual Awards Luncheon on Wednesday, September 26, 2018 and are dedicated to further serving their peers and communities at large.
